lele - if you do manage to stay in NYC for a few months, DO NOT stay in July or Aug. NYC gets hot and very humid in the summer months and it can be very uncomfortable. Of course there is much more A/C now than when I lived there. Also there are more cockroaches due to the weather and yes, I must mention those pesky bugs. They can be in the cleanest apartments.
You may want to check with an apartment rental agency re: sublets. I don't know where you live, but in cities a couple of blocks in one direction or another can take you into an undesirable or unsafe area.
I grew up in Queens, in a single family house and never lived in an apt. in NYC.
Sounds like a fun idea.
