I grew up in Queens NYC and we had plenty of winter snow but I don't remember extreme cold. I walked to school through 8th grade, but it was only a few city blocks. For high school we took a regular City bus and had to walk to the regular bus stops and then walk about 5 long city blocks to the high school.
I was never fond of winter and was a sissy when it came to boys throwing snowballs and iceballs although I do remember the boys building forts and having snowball wars. Several years my Dad built an igloo in our yard and a bunch of us played there and he also made a high pile of snow in the yard so we could slide down it on our butts.
I lived in an area of parks and cemeteries and a golf course and we did lots of sledding and ice skating there. I went along
because that's what my friends were doing, not because I loved the activities or the snow and cold. But I did love indoor ice skating and took lessons with the Girl Scouts.

Sandy - I think my sister would disagree with you about the winter weather. Some years they have had more snow than we have as the storms go out to sea and don't get up here. This year we are about even but we didn't get that storm yesterday.
