Being vaccinated reduces your chance of serious illness or death, but how much depends a lot on your immune system and if you have any pre-existing conditions. The worst part of being able to be infected multiple times is that the more times you get it the higher your chance of an adverse outcome. This is definitely not a get and forget bug!
I think the lack of news coverage of the ongoing pandemic is because people want to believe it's behind us and want things to get "back to normal". That's not going to happen sadly, we have a new normal we need to get used to, but it's a common problem that people like to think that if they ignore something it will go away -- combine that with "bad things happen to other people" and you can see why this hasn't been controlled.
