Book Board Chat

Hey gang! THANK YOU Paula! Must have been your link that I used to wander in here! As for books being in the tank, heck, I think everythings been in the tank the last couple of years. That said, the "good stuff" always does well, its the mid line things, from say $30-$80, that used to be my bread and butter, that have sort of suffered. Gone are the days when I could list an item, go pee, and come back to $300 worth of bids!!! 🙂 Well, not much you can do about that....used to be in the 70's, I could fill my truck on Saturday for $50, too, but those days are long gone now....:-)
I DID just buy about 800 LP's, most of which are still sealed, I'm doing pretty well with, but thats a fluke, for sure.

As for the trolls, Ebay could have stopped that problem in a heartbeat, but chose not to do anything about it. Many of the knowledgeable posters left some time ago....a couple still remain, but its a far cry from what it was say four or five years ago. One of the NON troll reasons for the nervous disintegration was that a few of the more "distilled" posters/dealers thought talking about your cat, or saying happy birthday or playing a song now and then was disruptive to the "academic" tone of the board... and a major rift ensued at that point, with the "wizards of antiques" disrespecting every comment that a personal note to it. That sort of intolererance also drove me up the wall and helped me to get the hell out of Dodge.
I started out dealing in glass, then american art pottery, and finally landed in the paper end of the business along time ago....but I DO remember little mom and pop shops that were exclusively glass related, etc.....those were the palces youd find some nifty items they werent particularly interested in for a song....I do sort of miss the days when you could walk into a shop; and pit your intellect and acumen vs. the owners...that was FUN! 🙂

There used to be a fellow on the book board that sort of "ran" things, as I recall, a very sharp guy who helped me a LOT when I had book questions, but for the life of me, I cant remember what his name was. He would occasionally hop into the antiques board with a help as well.
I know enough about books to be dangerous, and in the area I'm in, I don't have much competition for books. Problem is, its always been a lower middle class sort of place which has catered to the aircraft industry for decades, so you dont SEE a lot of interesting books here......but I get what I gets, I guess, like the rest of us. Anyway, again, thanks for the warm welcome, I think Im going to like it here!!! 🙂
