Jim --I wouldn't say the press as a whole has become more partisan. Some outlets have become more polarized. Both parties seem to think they are being picked on. A person can watch or read Fox and see the Dems get attacked, you'll never see a Dem office holder mentioned without a negative adjective, ugly nickname, or they will be tied to a bad situation of some kind. On the other hand, one can watch MSNBC and see somewhat less name calling, but the Republicans are definitely presented in negative light.
One can watch the regular daily/nightly news (not Fox News) NBC ABC PBS etc and get shorter mentions but a somewhat less polarized version most of the time. There are lots more sources--newspapers, TV stations and online reports and blogs. AP (website) tends to write more factual reports which avoid negative and inflammatory language. . I also believe PBS to be more interested in facts, though some consider them liberal. Another more factual/balanced source is the 1440 a new online source I have been trying out.
Although I am quite skeptical of Polls these days, here is a very interesting article on Polarization and Media habits
