LIL - New Mexico.. If you have the least little interest in UFO's the UFO Museum in Roswell was really neat. Then south of there (I didn't have enough time) is Carlsbad and Rioduso (sp?) Downs race tack.
In Arizona a Nat. Park or monument begins with a "C" interesting topography and cacti I did not make it there either but wanted to.
S. California. Borrego Springs is where Mom and I stayed in the Borrego Desert in 1996. It is another park ...National (?), maybe state. Saw my only Road Runner and Anna's Hummingbird there and hired to see Elephant trees. My first and only time in that type of desert. Bought tons of Avacados at road side stands Mmmm good. Beware the choia (sp?) cactus. One 'jumped" and got Mom. Then there is the Salton Sea which is quite close. And the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway too but did that way back in '63.
You can take smaller roads from there (Borrego) over mountains through Julian to San Diego. At San Diego we stayed at a very nice complex for $59 a night ( regular $160) or so using Motor Club coupon. Did Old San Diego. Did not have time to go to out to the Coronado Hotel. Hit all the old Spanish Missons we could, too.If there are quite a few National parks and Monuments you could get that Golden Eagle pass if they still have it available. It saved us tons of entrances fees but you probably already know about it.
