Howdy-do. Hope all are well. I'm dropping by to ask for suggestions for a good book to put on my Kindle (would like something free from Amazon). I've been catching up on the Iris Johansen forensic-style books at the recommendation of a friend, but am about burned out on those now. Want something to read while I'm cooling my heels in a surgery waiting room next week. Next Monday best friend is having an elective double mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery (diagnosed with a small tumor in her left breast earlier this month, but she didn't want to chance a simple lumpectomy with radiation). Take them both, she decided. I'm 66 and this just makes me mad as hell. Got any ideas?

Mystery – You’ve got a circa 1900 New Haven alarm clock. Interesting wooden case. It probably needs a good cleaning to work properly because sometimes the mainspring gets gummed up from old lubricant and starts to stick and so won’t unwind cleanly. Looks like you could pry out the small nails or brads holding the back on the case look at the the movement in the case that way. Take another look-see for maker marks on the movement. The movement is probably held inside the case with some screws.

I have one of those apple peeler/corer/slicer machines and adore it. I make applesauce year-round and it's delicious. I use combinations of apples, like Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Gala or Fuji, and Braeburn if they're available. That machine makes quick work of the hard part. Yesterday I got permission to let a 9-month-old baby try some for the first time. He adored it; I was so proud. I do about a dozen apples at a time, and the recipe only calls for 1/2 cup of added sugar.

Wanted to wish all here a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Thanks for being here. I had seafood today for the tradition (shrimp) and tomorrow will prepare a standing beef rib roast for those of us without family. It’s a nice get together.

The mention of wearing a watch reminded me of something that happened recently. I was furniture shopping with a friend (Virginia) who’s a few years older than I and her daughter Sarah, who’d brought along VA’s grandson in a carrier. Somebody at one point asked what time it was….Sarah immediately looked at her cell phone, I looked at my watch, and Virginia looked outside to check the position of the sun in the sky. Gotta be a generation thing.

Prior to lessons learned on the ground in Vietnam, officers and enlisted just wore their usual gold insignias. Which turned out to be pretty good targets for snipers. So they went to subdued black. I will say I have never run across a hat badge in subdued black; that item wasn't worn on the combat uniform. OK, your star US pin is one of two versions of the Honorable Discharge pin, the other being the more famous "ruptured duck" with an eagle.

mysteryhorse – You have US Army insignia (officer) in subdued black instead of gleaming gold. The subdued insignia was introduced during Vietnam and is still in use. The crossed cannons indicate the Artillery Corps. I see a subdued hat badge (the eagle and shield) and what looks to be a second lieutenant bar (if it’s gold, if it’s silver that’s a first lieutenant). The little round starred device I can't see very well. Can you do a closeup of it? Might be a pin for something after service, like the American Legion or VFW.

Someone mentioned several days ago about how they'd like to catch up on older PBS dramas like "Poldark" from the 1970's. Lord, I loved that show, and would always be home at 9 on Sundays to watch it. I recently rented the whole shebang from Netflix and caught up with it again. Interestingly, one of the lesser actors in the original series is still in the biz. Kevin McNally, who plays Drake Carne (romantic lead in a substory) and who was then very young and dashingly handsome, now plays pirate Joshamee Gibbs, henchman to Johnny Depp's Capt Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Time has not been kind to him.

casinokat - My neighbor has run into similar issues. Her 90+ husband has COPD and must have oxygen. After the tornado we had on April 27 and lost power for 7 days she bought a generator to keep his equipment running. Guess what? Her insurance won't pay for that. It was a life-saving measure and took her a while to find one in the first place, but her insurance won't cover it. That isn't right.

@beth - Maybe it’s the skeptic in me, Beth, but I have a hunch he’s been amazed by the number of excellent replacement boards that have been created, and from which eBay will not realize one red cent. Guess we weren’t supposed to be smart enough to carry on without them. Community announcements now seem to indicate Sept 30 is the closeout date.

"Although I haven't posted the final date for Chat and Neighborhoods, I will say here that we will not be closing them on August 15th. The current thought is that we will close them at the end of September or perhaps even as late as October.

I do have a book related ?. The other day I read an article containing suggestions for revamping your own bookshelves. One thing they said was to get rid of anything that says Chemistry 101 on the spine or similar texts. Is there really no market for these? I kept many of my own zoology texts from a century ago.
