• I have been with out a computer for two weeks. My daughter is here now trying to get me back in the groove. I fear that I am a slow learner.

  • You ask for jokes. Here is an old and tired one.
Two birds setting on a limb with their heads tucked under their wing . One bird withdrew his head and said "My instinct tell me to go that way." Second bird withdrew his head and said "My end stinks too. But it sure does not tell which way to go."

  • Just trying to refresh the BB

  • Mim has long been a personal friend of mine. She was one of the first book sellers that I became acquainted with after moving to Indianapolis. I will miss her.

  • I am reading a book about Cleopatra set 40BC or so. I find it amusing that Cleopatra and other women of that time wore their hair in Dreadlocks and braids.

  • The quotation is from Albert Einstein.

  • I thought this an interesting theme and worth sharing. On the cover of Dh's weekly planner is " Learn from yesterday-Live for today- Hope for tomorrow."

  • Good morning. Thanks for the responses about my political posts. Most of my family have been interested in politics----- my timeline goes back to Franklin Roosevelt . Certainly in a family of nine children there were disagreements political party wise and and otherwise but there never any animosity involved.

  • My apologies to anyone who was offended at my political post . I was using "coming out of the woodwork as a Idiom which I thought was well known and would be recognized as such.
Henceforth I will post only about the weather. I do like to this board at least once each day. So if you care at all about my posts you can expect Weather Weather Weather.
Which by the way-We had rain last night but sunny and warm today. Summer is fast approaching.

  • Another comment. Political this time. I had mentioned to my DH just yesterday that the 'Clinton haters' were coming out to the wood work. I think that it will get much worse as the election time rolls around.

  • Good morning BBers. Cloudy and overcast here in Indy but temps approaching the 80s on most days.
Lots of basketball of late but I had previously not noticed that 'flopping' fouls being called on various players. I did know what a flopping foul was so Googled it. Here is what I found.
"In basketball, a flop is an intentional fall by a player after little or no physical contact by an opposing player in order to draw a personal foul call by an official against the opponent.[1] The move is sometimes called acting, as in "acting as if he was fouled". Because it is inherently designed to deceive the official, flopping is generally considered to be unsportsmanlike. Nonetheless, it is widely practiced and even perfected by many professional players.

Flopping effectively is not easy to do, primarily because drawing contact can sometimes result in the opposite effect—a foul called on the defensive player—when too much contact is drawn or if the player has not positioned himself perfectly. Additionally, even if no foul is called on either player, by falling to the floor, the flopping defensive player will have taken himself out of position to provide any further defensive opposition on the play, thus potentially allowing the offense to score easily. To consistently draw offensive fouls on opponents takes good body control and a great deal of practice. Players generally become better at flopping as their careers progress.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) added a rule in 1997 to cut down on flopping near the basket, adding a 4-foot (1.22 meter) "dotted line area" around the center of the basket to help prevent flops. Such flops are charged as blocking fouls or no-calls. In the 2012–13 season, the league began fining guilty players.

In the NBA, the penalty for "flopping" is a technical foul, which starting in 2013-14 would be one of two fouls counted towards ejection.

2012-13 National Federation of State High School Associations basketball rule 10.6.f specifically defines "faking being fouled," in the judgment of an official, as unsportsmanlike conduct subject to penalty of a technical foul, but in practice this call is exceptionally rare."
In football or hockey it is called "diving."
You always wanted to know that didn't you.?

  • Good evening BBers. Just having a discussion with my DGD about using the word euphemism when trying to teach her 4 yo son about them. I told her that the word 'euphimism ' would scare me off. Cloudy and rain here in Indy. Suppose to be sunny tomorrow.

  • Patsy ---Love that pic of you and your red headed DGS .

  • Interesting Jim. I just finished reading an article in Time magazine about transgender persons.

  • Diane, I think you will never regret moving to be near your family. In 1986 we moved here to be near our children. DH had said many times that he was going to move back to the Arkansas farm which he had inherited. Since then has sold that farm and a very nice house. There were many problems in keeping that farm and house.
Just recently I ask him if he thought we had made the right decision. He said the this was the right and best move for us. We are really enjoying being able to see our daughters, grand children and great grand children.

  • One of my brothers had done quite a lot of genealogy work after he retired. He had located the graves of many of our ancestors. Some nephews had been observing his work and decided they wanted to see the cemetery where our ancestors were buried so several of us gathered in our home town and that brother took us on what we called " A cemetery hop ." There were so many of us that my brother rented a school bus so we would all be together. I saw several cemeteries that I had heard about through out my life time. We shared many stories about the various ancestors.

  • When we lived in El Paso,TX Our house was up on the desert. But we could go down the hill into what was called "The Valley" where the farmers had access to the river for irrigation purposes. There was always plenty of fruit available in our markets. And there was a military base just north of El Paso which made for some interesting watching. We had a nice green lawn but oh those 'goat heads' could be painful to bare feet.

  • Carol - The first time we drove across Texas our now 60 year old daughter was only 4 years old. She kept waking up from another nap to ask " Are we still in Texas ?" Yes, Texas is a big state.

  • Nice sunny day here in Indy. We got a little rain very early this morning.
On boys names. Nobody in my family of eight brothers, 6-7 sons in laws 45 plus nieces and nephews. Seven grands and more great grands have any of those names .
I guess we are really behind the times.

  • Good evening. A nice day here in Indy but I am having computer problems . This is test to see if all is well with my computer here.

  • mysteryhorse--- Thanks for the report. It is always fun to see an -underdog-horse that is- win.
Looks like we are in for a sunny day here in Indy.

  • Good morning all. Beautiful sunny day here in Indy. Hope we get to watch the basket ball game tonight. Our Indy Pacers have did not made it this far but will be fun to watch I believe it is the Atlanta Hawks and but I don't know who they are playing.

  • In my life time I have known only person who was killed by a Lightning strike. He was standing in open field--- no trees or anything that would have made him more dangerous.
More recently We have had several children struck by lighting while they were playing at a summer camp. All were taken to the hospital but released after a couple days in the hospital. As far as I know none had serious injuries.

  • Beautiful sunny day here in Indy. Need to get some doors open. Have not turned the AC on and probably won't for another 10 days or so.
A bit of foolishness. Ribick Cubes are 40 years old this week.

  • Beautiful day here in Indy. I do beiieve that spring is here.
DH says that he has four varieties of dandelions. The first variety is " bigger" with the second variety being "better bigger."

  • Supposed to be clear and in the 50s here in Indianapolis. Guess they are right as that is what I see out the window from here in my northwest room. Jonquils are blooming in our front yard. I reminded our now 18 yo grandson that we had bought the bulbs for these from him when he was in kindergarten. Now he is ready to start college. He will be studying computer science. Computer science is his father's profession. The GS has two white boards installed in his bedroom where he writes programs for his dad's approval.

  • Just checking in. Nice sunny day here in Indy. Temps in the high 70s yesterday and today.

  • Speaking of age--- Our ARP paper had some comments on the subject. A Joan Rivers quote' I've had so much plastic surgery, when I die they will have to donate by body to Tupperware'.

  • Several weeks ago I ask what "one and done" was about. I have come to the conclusion that when referring to athletes at the university level it means an athlete might have attended or will attend a university for only one year .

  • Hi jcorn. I have been wondering what happened to you. I used to see you now and then at the post office but nowadays I am pretty much a "shut-in" so postman picks up my packages at our mailbox. We are lucky to have a postman who will do so as this is not required of them.
Fortunately several years ago I was in our branch post office when a clerk ask who our postman was. Apparently our postman received instruction to that he/she was to pick up our packages. Others complain about postal employees but we have always had very considerate post people . Often they bring our packages to the front door.

  • I am just seeing on the news that there has been another shooting at Fort Hood. Four dead with 14 injured.

  • Good morning BBBers. Homemade rice pudding sounds GOOD to me. I may have to make some today.
Just thinking about a silly game that my brothers and I used to play. When we were playing cards if one made a mistake he was called a Pig. When one accumulated three Pigs one then became a Hog. When another player made a mistake and was named a Pig they could say "Well at least I'm not a Hog like you."
About that time Mom sent us to bed.

  • That is the IPS or Indianapolis Public School System.

  • I have not checked temperatures but sun is shining here in Indy. Looks like we'll have a beautiful day.
And Dan this term "one and done " seems to refer not to a score but to a players eligibility. What am I missing ?
The top state basketball team was Tech from the Indiana Public School System. I believe this is the first time an IPS school has won in 34 years. Tech will now play some Texas school.
There is already much ballyhoo about the Indy 500. And so it goes.

  • Nice sunny day here in Indy.
Will somebody who understands define the 'one and done' policy in basketball in simple terms that maybe I can understand? I found the Wiki page but still do not understand .

  • Good morning BBers. A sunny day at 22 degrees and temps going up !!! We'll make the best of it while we have it as weather reports say back to rain tomorrow. Spring is coming. G grandson was here yesterday He and gramps inspected the bed where gramps had planted seed.

  • Good morning everybody . We have rain here in Indiana. Maybe sun tomorrow but then back to
cloudy days with showers. Guess that is supposed to be typical for April in Indiana. I hope DH's garden seeds will be sprouting soon. I'm looking forward to lettuce and green onions.

  • Cold but warming weather in Indiana
@dupo . We have a cat loving DDIL who lives in a suburb of St. Louis' I told her about the Clowder House.

  • Good morning every body. Just now getting rolling. I have plenty on my 'to do' list . The Indiana weather report tells me that we can expect a "sunny start, chilly and dry with possible temps up to 38 degrees". And maybe some light snow in some areas. Lots of possibilities there. LOL
Before I go ----Happy Birthday Diane.

  • Bob I gave it a shot. Listed one item . Now to do follow up to see what my charges are. Thanks

  • Good morning from Indianapolis . Bright and sunny out there with temps near 40 degrees. Don't know what might be in store for today except I have a few more books to add to my database. I have ask my selling partner DD to buy more for at the next library sale.
Also sort of waiting for eBay to have a free listing period so can attempt to sell my non-book items.
I saw two pair of robins on the front porch rail. Maybe they will be nesting in the nearby bushes. I have not been robin watching so they may have been around for quite some time.

  • Patsy--- What a charmer !!!

  • Good morning Patsy . There is just one thing better than Grand children-----that being Great grandchildren. We have five of those. One of them lives here in town. He comes to see us at least once a week.

  • Funny Carol. I once was supervising two young women who were part time help in a newspaper office. I suggested that they clean the windows with some discarded newspapers. They would have nothing to do with that option so they proceeded with regular window cleaner and paper towels.

  • Diane-- Finding the pictures of your friend's mother. What a nice thing to have happen. And probably only could have happened only through the Internet.

  • Every two weeks or so we drop our newspapers to a local thrift store for them to use as wrapping or packing. They seem to appreciated them.
They make good weed control too. Just put them down and put some wood chips on top of them. They control the weeds and eventually disintegrate to enrich the soil.

  • We have a beautiful sunny day here in Indianapolis with temps in the 60s.
Mention retirement and I think of one of my brothers who retired as a carrier from the Los Angeles , CA post office after 25 years of service. He had set his alarm clock for the usual time that he had had to get up. When the alarm went off he smashed the alarm clock with the hammer that he had put at his bedside for that purpose.
He moved back to our home town where he enjoyed many years of retirement but he never quit working. He collected family history . He wrote and published a a family genealogy book. He coached youth baseball teams. He wrote a weekly column for the local newspaper for which he had readers scattered across the entire USA. He coached youth baseball teams. He drove a school bus and cared for his grandchildren.

  • Jim. Thanks. I'll give that some thought. I'll also consider the carbonite that Bob is using.

  • I keep getting messages that I need to back up my computer. I know nothing about how to do this. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Good morning. We have 28 degrees-- cloudy skies with expected rain here in Indianapolis. The rain should remove the last of the snow covering that has been on the ground for about a week. No greenery popping up in flower beds ----yet !!!

  • Bright sunny day her in Indianapolis. The snow covering is disappearing at a pretty rapid rate. Please add my wishes for a Happy Birthday for Gail and June.

  • Diane, I hope your son's treatment is successful.

  • We have had cold but sunny day here in Indianapolis. Me too! On getting that Twelve Years a Slave loaded to my Kindle.
The latest on that G Grandson who loves construction equipment. His Grandma pointed out a
piece of equipment saying "Oh look at that front end loader." He quickly corrected her saying " That's not a front end loader that's an excavator."

  • A little funny for you from our G Grandsons:::
"Bolt drew on our comforter with a pen.
    Josh: Bolt, say sorry.
    Bolt: ...
    Josh: Say sorry.
    Bolt: (whispers) sssah
Josh: What was that? Say it loud.
    Bolt: Loud!

  • Sunny and very cold here in Indianapolis . 4-6 inches of snow on the ground.
DH has to go to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription.
I have instructed him to pick up a bag of peeps for me. He doesn't know what peeps are so he will have to ask. He hates to ask for help but maybe he will do it this time.
I did not watch the academy awards either but I like to try to keep up a bit so I'll be watching for the various comments from television announcers and others.

  • Good morning everybody. Indianapolis temperature is at 17 degrees above zero. We had about 2 inches of snow earlier. It is snowing now with 4-to 8 inches more expected.

  • A funny little story which maybe will brighten your day:
The grandmother had listened to a record entitled "Sore Looser" with her 4 year old grandson. She was trying to help grandson understand what a sore looser was.The grandfather has a basement shop full of wood working tools at first the grandson ask "Saw user?". After more puzzlement the grandson ask "Would a band aid help?"

  • A little laugh for you::
HOW TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN YOU'RE OLD, AND DON'T MOVE FAST ANYMORE...
George Phillips, an elderly man, from Tampa, Florida, was going up to
bed, when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed,
which she could see from the bedroom window.
George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that
there were people in the shed stealing things.
He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?"
He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and
    stealing from me.
Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock
your doors and an officer will be along when one is available"
    George said, "Okay."
He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he phoned the police
    again.
"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people
stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now
because I just shot and killed them both. The dogs are eating them right
    now." and he hung up.
Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two
Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips '
residence, and caught the burglars red-handed.
One of the Policemen said to George , "I thought you said that you'd
    shot them!"
George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"
(True Story) I LOVE IT! Don't mess with old people.

REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL

  • It is a family of six---- 4 children and parents. Still very tragic.

  • A terrible tragedy in the local news. Parents and 6 children perished in a house fire. As of now they do not know how the fire started.
Hundreds of people have come to view the site and to place stuffed toys and flowers. The mayor of Indianapolis has come to view the site.

  • I mentioned this before but here goes again. I find that buyers will throw in a low offer just before the auction is due to end. I had that
happen yesterday. But the buyer came back after the item was relisted and made the same offer. I quickly accepted the offer. Now to get the buyer to pay.

  • DH set three traps with peanut butter. He got one mouse before he went to bed and reset that trap. This morning he reports that the peanut butter is gone from all three of the traps but no more mice were caught. Sneaky little devils !!!!! Apparently we have MICE

  • Cold sunny day here in Indy.
DH found his mouse traps and trapped one last night. Now we'll see if we had a mouse or if we have MICE.
With all the talk of peeps y'all are making me hungry for something sweet. Maybe I have a chocolate ship cookie left.

  • Nice sunny day here in Indy. DH is looking for his mouse traps. Yep--- little visitors not the two legged grandson kind --- have been chewing on his chocolate wafers. He hasn't found his traps so looks like it off to the store to purchase mouse traps.

  • I love Facebook because so many of my nieces and nephews that I don't see or hear from often post on Facebook .

  • Thanks to all of you who are commenting on these Olympic events. I know so little about most of them. Your comments are really helping put me in the picture.

  • We have 8 or so inches of fresh snow. Our post person got stuck in front of our mail box. All the neighborhood guys have been out there helping dig him out and getting him going again. He is gone !!!!!

  • I am reading Edward Rutherford's The Rebels of Ireland. I just finished re-reading London. I seldom wish to read everything that a particular author has written. Edward Rutherford is an exception as one learns the history of the place that Rutherford writes about.
I note that he has another book Princes of Ireland. I'll probably order that book.

  • Egads ---- Over 4000 listings on Ebay for Shirley Temple stuff. But not many are selling.

  • Jude have you checked Ebay for the missing parts of the out fit your Shirley Temple doll? Those parts just might be for sale there. Or perhaps there will be those who have been waiting for a propitious time to list them.

  • Good afternoon everybody. In my early Ebay days I sold a Shirley Temple doll that had been given to my DSIL by a very loving aunt and uncle. I had found the doll in the attic of a family farm house in which we lived for awhile. The DSIL who had owned it was deceased.

  • Any Beatles fans out there? I remember that as I taking my almost 3 yo daughter for a walk she would chant I wanta hold your hand .
Today March 9, 2014 is the 50th anniversary of their appearance on the Ed Sullivan show.
    Some quotes from the net.
How big an event was The Beatles’s first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show? The numbers are still staggering: More than one-third of the country watched—73 million people, in a nation then of 191 million. The equivalent today would be 100 or 105 million people watching something. That is true only of Super Bowls, typically viewed by 110 to 120 million Americans now (112 million, this recent one). The M*A*S*H finale in 1983 is still tops, percentage-wise; it got nearly half the country, 106 million out of 234 million. But outside of those two examples, nothing else quite stacks up, 50 years later.
Swan--- a record company that had purchased this label--- immediately rushed out “She Loves You,” and, immediately, it went to #2. In late March it even dislodged “I Want to Hold Your Hand” from the top spot.

  • USPS is most welcome to open any package that we have or will ship. We have never - ever used Media Mail for any thing other than that which is approved. But I'll bet there are many who have used MM for many things other than approved items.

  • Just checking in and looking at stuff on the great Larry Bird. He needs a face lift.

  • We are getting more than a taste of the snow and cold here in Indiana. The thermometer has hung near zero for the past 3-4 days. About 6 inches of the white fluffy stuff as come down since late yesterday. With all the shortages of propane I'm sure glad our heat source is natural gas.
Bob---- Congratulations on your free finds.

  • I need some help. I have a listing the title of which is ::NWOT RMC Martin Ksohoh 1001 Samurai Bondage Pockets Sz. 32-37 Cotton Denim NEW because of Trademark Violation. I would like suggestions for how to change the title so that it would not be a Trademark Violation.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • And just now seeing news of a bar fight in down town Indianapolis with 60-80 people involved. Four people arrested and three police officers injured.

  • What is going on? Two separate and deadly shooting incidents at Purdue. And now one at Michigan State.

  • Tonight I am thankful and will be thankful for two things. I am thankful that we do not heat with propane as there is a declared shortage here in Central Indiana where we are having a prolonged spell of very cold weather. Our heat source is natural gas. And I will thankful when the Super Bowl is over. We will watch the actual game but I am tired all this folderol leading up to it.
Beth, I had missed knowing that your DH was having surgery. I hope that things continue to go well for the two of you and your families.

  • Thanks for all the ideas and help. I have almost arrived at the conclusion that I must use Ebays resolution center to resolve this problem. I have not given the buyer a refund yet. I have used the resolution center on other occasions and found it to be quite satisfactory.

  • I need some help. I have a buyer who wants an item shipped to Malaysia but paid only shipping to USA. I want to cancel the order. How do I do that ? Thanks , beads!books!glitter!

  • Good morning and Happy Birthday Mim. What are we 39 again? Could wish for a ' going out to lunch' date but it is too cold for that.

  • I just finished reading on my Kindle Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan. I am not especially a dog or animal lover but I highly recommend this book as a 'good read' for everybody.

  • Good morning BBers,
Sunny but quite cold here in Indianapolis. We got some fresh snow last night----- less than an inch of accumulation. Pretty gentle wind but seems to make it colder.

  • We have our very own Red Chief in our 14yo G-Grandson. His paternal G-parents took him along with parents and his older brother and sister on a skiing trip to Vail. The parents of the other two had them but Red Chief rode with his paternal grand parents. I've been thinking of asking Red Chief's grandparents if they would have paid the ransom. Yes the G-Grandson is much like Red Chief but I would not change a thing about our G-Grandson. And I suspect that his grandfather recognizes himself in the boy.

  • I too loved Ransom of Red Chief and other O Henry stories. It reminds me of a favorite teacher and a friend. I'll bet he remembers when he read the book to his class mates.

  • Since no one took on my challenge to determine who was the first person to use the term 'bad hair day' I guess I'll have to tell you. It was Jane Pauley. Upon her retirement she was being interviewed by Brian Gumbel on the the Today show she mentioned bad hair day. The next day her husband Garry Treadeau put it in his Doonesbury strip.

  • Irene---Looks like there has been plenty of time but I don't see anything from you.

  • Good morning BBers. Appreciated the responses to the London Bridge question. For today a bit of fun.
Where and how did the phrase 'bad hair day' get started? A little tip---- an interview in a current news magazine gave me the idea for this silly question.

  • Thanks Jude. I had Googled but probably did not dig deep enough to find that. And to others. I did not know that some of those books existed. Will make a note of them and perhaps get them for my Kindle.

  • Question ??? Does any London bridge actually have houses as described in the Edward Rutherford novel London?

  • I am reading the Edward Rutherford novel London and have The Rebels of Ireland set aside to read next. I had read Sarum many years ago when we were touring Great Britain. I may decide to reread Sarum. I find that I really have to concentrate to try to keep the details in mind.

  • I am taking my own advice----I stay out of the kitchen mostly because I am unable to many of the things that I had done before. In fact I recently made a foray into the kitchen Dh told me that this was now his kitchen. And so it is.

  • Long ago at Christmas time we always made a trip to Arkansas to see my mother. Often we were able to visit one or another of my many brothers.
When my Dh decided to retire in 1986 we decided to ask the advice of each of those brothers ab0ut retiring. The brother in El Dorado , Mo had retired from the Los Angeles post office. Upon retirement they moved to El Dorado which was his wife home town.
When we ask him he said "Don't". His lovely wife simply did not like him giving her advice about how she did things in her own kitchen. And she was right. Stay out of the kitchen!!!

  • Temperature up to about 38 degrees with expected rain tonight to melt the snow here in central Indiana.
Clever punch line from Funky Winkerbean comic strip " Apparently, these days tough people don't always last--- but tough times do."

  • We are having terrible weather here in Indiana and I understand that the weather is the same across much of the Midwest and northeast. Our postman has not delivered or picked mail in four days.I've been watching lots of television. Someone has shared a video of small dog which has made its way through several feet of 10 to 11 inches of snow to retrieve the newspaper. Clever stress relieve video. .

  • Dh's book was from 1991 not 1981. He said that he had to finish it to see " Whether or not we lived. But apparently we did."

  • Good morning BBers---- Still very cold here. Sunny yesterday with temps a bit below zero with 11 inches or so of snow. Beautiful view across the back yard with tree limbs still laden with snow. I see tracks from back property line across the back yard and up to the deck so some small animal has been searching for food or water.
I am fine but sleeping a lot and just lying low. Have a couple of ebay items and books to ship. Our postman got here yesterday but not the day before.
So thankful to have good neighbors and family who check on us every day. Yesterday Dh found his daily diary from 1981. He stayed up until 2:00am reading that. He is feeling pretty good too.

  • Horrible weather here. No school today or tomorrow. Governor Pence has declared a state of emergency for much of Indiana.
Our 16 year old neighbor boy cleared our driveway and that of the 'across the street' neighbor. Our circle has been plowed and looks passable. Probably the postman will get here but noticed that USPS had said that mail would be delivered 'where possible'.

  • Snow still coming down with no predicted breaks. All the family has checked on us. Earlier a neighbor made a path from garage door to the drive way. That has now filled up. We have been warned to expect power outages. Dh has his cell phone charged up. Just glad to crawl under my blanket and read something from my Kindle. I am sure that other neighbors are keeping an eye on us. So sent emails to all neighbors to tell them that we are safe and snug. One neighbor is a fireman. He gave us his phone number with instructions to call him if help is needed. From watching tv coverage it is surprising to see so many vehicles on the road.
