People in NY/NJ mostly are wearing masks, but as I see from the news there's a lot of non compliance. Cases of the virus are on the increase again. I just had a bit of a scare this week. I had a few friends over for an outdoor dinner. This is a group that I have been together with quite a bit. Anyway, one of the group felt ill a couple of days later and went in for a covid test. I immediately quarantined myself, just in case. Luckily we found out today that she was negative . But that was a wakeup call for me, I'm going to be much more careful going forward
-
We've had thunderstorms almost every day this week, one day it was Terribly windy too. Coming down right now and just heard thunder. Well, it will help to cool things off it was hot and humid today. My plans to grill some chicken didn't work out so had an omelet. Have been enjoying the local corn and tomatoes.
I haven't checked in for a while, but I an glad to report that I am cancer free. I still have some treatments to get through but they are a piece of cake compared to chemo. My hair is growing back, first time in many years I've seen my natural color lol

Our church here in NJ held a virtual service this morning via Zoom. It was quite successful and well attended. Nice to be able to keep up our connections at this time. Our church has suspended all in person interactions. Since I am not in a position to be with other people, it was nice to be able to attend this

I agree with Beth. This is very scary. I haven't mentioned this here, but I am going through treatment for breast cancer. My prognosis is very good, but I am undergoing chemotherapy which weakens immunity. After I complete that in early April, I am scheduled to have surgery. I'm afraid that it will become dangerous to be in the hospital due to the virus. In the meantime I am severely limiting excursions out and we are stocking up on essentials.
JoAnne, I don't believe the flu shot gives any immunity against this virus. There is a lot of virus in your area. It hasn't reached our county yet, it's just a matter of time.
And I think one of the worst things is that it's become political. This is one time we all have to work together
-
Jim, in Suffolk county NY, where I spend my summers, we have a bag tax, plastic only. 5 cents a bag. Similar bills being considered in many other states. I personally try to avoid plastic bags whenever possible. I carry cloth bags in my car and purse. I think this is a great way to cut spending on pollution, a start anyway! It's gratifying to see the great efforts by people to really comply with this. My most recent trip to a supermarket on Long Island I saw few requesting the plastic bags

I didn't have any type of service or calling hours for my father. No one really to attend. He was cremated and I'll scatter his ashes at some point. I have asked for the same for myself, no funeral or calling hours, and cremation. .

I also had a good days at the sales yesterday. It was very hot, but probably my best day this summer. The best score was 7 Star Wars Lego sets for $40. They are in the boxes but opened. Even partial sets sell for good money. Some will probably go for 100+. Also gotten a travel, scrabble game for free that should go for $24.99 or thereabouts, and a nice deluxe golden book Chinese fairy tales, that should go for around $45, and a set of silverplate flatware. Silverplate is a good seller for me.

I love hearing about old times, I'm very interested in genealogy and like to learn about how my ancestors might have lived.
My grandmother, long after they fell out of fashion, always wore seamed stockings. Every Christmas, we would get her a few pairs from the one department store that still carried them. I guess now no one wears stockings, which is just fine with me!

Deer are a nuisance both here on Long Island and in New Jersey. Way overpopulated, and they eat everything! We see lots of them dead on the side of the road in NJ. I see deer every day, they are no longer a welcome sight, they also carry Lyme disease.

Ann, have you considered volunteer work? I volunteer at a local thrift shop and food pantry. My main function is to sell some of their better stuff on eBay for them, but I also am cashier and receiving person when needed. It's very rewarding, the proceeds from the shop, help fund the food pantry. Now that I'm in my summer residence, looking to find a volunteer opportunity here.
Beth, how disappointing for you! Hope the issue can be resolved quickly

My father passes away yesterday. He had been ill for a really long time. He was 90.
I can't say enough in praise of his long time caregivers, Betty and Loretta, and for hospice, who cared for him in his final weeks. They made his final days comfortable and peaceful.

I've never liked my given name Sandra. I've always been called Sandy, only my mother refused to use it! I do use Sandra as my legal name.
I wanted to name my daughter Elizabeth but a good friend of mine had a baby just a couple of months before I did, and named her baby Elizabeth, so I felt I couldn't use it, which in retrospect was silly, and of course we drifted apart, it wouldn't have mattered. Anyway we settled on Bethany, and always called her Beth. Now she calls herself Bethany, not Beth, but doesn't mind if I call her Beth.

-
Waiting for the big storm. Governor of NJ has already called a state of emergency. They got caught off guard last time so are over prepared this time. Not sure how active I would be in the DAR! If I get in. More interested in using some of their resources to help trace ancestors. They do a lot of good works, but maybe a bit too religious/conservative for me.
-
Jane, that's so cool! For the DAR, it has to be a direct descendant (grandfather). You might even have someone who is already confirmed which is an easier way to get in. (That is, an ancestor who, someone else has already proven is a revolutionary war patriot).

We seldom ate out either, even though I grew up in the suburbs of Long Island and there were loads of restaurants. My mother was a very picky eater and there were many foods I never had until I was an adult, like mushrooms, and a lot of other vegetables. Sometimes my father would take my brother and I out for Chinese food on the rare occasion my mother was out at dinner time, she would not eat Chinese food. Although she was allergic to seafood, we had fish and clams that my father caught.

I just listed my most expensive item ever, a first edition of the Little Prince. I've had it for a number of years finally decided its time to let it go.
I do a lot of crocheting, and often pick up yarn at yard sales. Last weekend, I got about 4 garbage bags full for $5. I didn't look at it too closely, but when I got it home, realized most of it is wool, which I don't like working with, as I find it itchy. So I listed some of it on ebay and have already sold the first lot, not for much money, but more than the $5 I paid for all of it! And so easy to list,
-
Gail, yes that is correct, you still have to go to the hospital after using an epi pen. But they can mean the difference between life and death. Epi pens are quite expensive, and they expire after about a year. So often you have to buy them and they go unused. I haven't seen anything about it recently, but there was quite a controversy over epi pens, a new manufacturer had bought the company that made them, and they increased the price by a lot.

I hadn't thought of that June. My neighbor and I went up to see what we could see, but they were not letting anyone close enough to see anything. After he left, we were able to get closer and saw the helicopter, and I took a picture of my friend in front of it. I just went along for the entertainment value, I'm not a Trump supporter by any means. Loads of cops there, and they held up traffic for, quite a while. They left the helicopter, so I suppose there will be another opportunity for people to,try to see him.

I bought a huge lot of Dover paper doll books a couple of weeks ago, I am sort of regretting it now. They aren't worth much, but on the other hand easy to list, and I can afford to let them sit. I've just about made my investment back after the first round of listings. I was hoping there would be some kind of Facebook paper doll selling group where I could unload the, but haven't found one.

The farm that Harry Deleyer owned, Hollandia Farm, is very close to my Long Island summer cottage, I pass it every time I go to town. I've got a bunch of partial sets and am making it my summer project to figure out what pieces go where. So far selling very well, and more to go....

Been working through my stockpile of Legos and getting them listed. 1st auctions finishing shortly with acceptable bids. They are a lot of work though. Hopefully worth it. Some of them I have to put together to make sure they're complete...many are not, but even 'parts' lots seem to do well. I had bought a bunch of kits a few years ago and they are a bit mixed up. Diane, you may find that the nursing home will not be able to give you much information on your friend. She will have had to give express permission that her information can be shared with you. Some places are stricter than others. You'll be able to probably get 'resting comfortably' or the like, but not much more than that. HIPAA regulations. Even when my father was in the hospital, and I called to speak to the nurse or doctor, I had to have a special code, or he had to verbally tell them it was ok to speak to me.
-
$10.00 is my listing minimum for both amazon and ebay. Just not worth my time to put the effort in for less than that. Maybe if I listed more on ebay, then those small sales add up and I'm not making a special trip,to,the po for a $5 item

I'm a terrible golfer too, but like Jane, I enjoy getting outside, and making my way around the course. I haven't played in a long time, but hope to get out more once I'm retired. I hate the par 5's, I don't hit it very far, so it takes me many strokes to get to the green. And I'm a terrible putter!
My parents had retired to a home on a golf course, and my father walked every day and found lots of balls, he must have had hundreds. Don't know what he ever did with all of them, I think he probably just used a lot of them.

I have been called for jury duty twice. Once I served, once I was dismissed. It was actually a very interesting experience. I would never try to get out of it, unless I had some really good reason. It's my civic duty that I'm proud to carry out.

Jim, when I was in Florida recently, the guy at the rental car desk was quite insistent that we HAD to get the ezpass, because we wouldn't be able to get around the tolls, and there were many places that didn't take cash. The price for the ezpass was $40. We'll, we declined, and used the gps on our phones to avoid toll roads. We didn't pay a single toll.

We live in a condo complex and have a similar system to Jude's. There is a large lock box at the mailbox bank, and the mailman leaves the key in our box if we get a package. If we have several or it's very large, the mailman brings it to the door.

Beth, that's amazing! That can only help him.

Beth, there are new medications for MS. And lots of work being done on developing new treatments. It will take some work on his part to find the right treatment, and don't forget the importance of diet exercise and other lifestyle adjustments. The course of ms is different for everyone, it's entirely possible he will go into remission and not become fully disabled.
