Thanks, Diane! We had lots of freezing rain today & I didn't go outside.
-
Hi Everyone! It's been a long time since I dropped in to chat. Thanks to Webmaster Curt I made it! I've had a lot of time on my hands this week without being able to do much. On March 17th I slipped on some slushy wooden steps and fell breaking 4 ribs. My feet went right out from under me. I go back to work on Tuesday with modified duties - no lifting for 3 weeks. I've been reading a lot & watching TV shows that I've recorded.
-
Thanks for the Birthday wishes. This has been the best birthday I've had in several years. I have my friends & co-workers to thank for that. I don't get much time to read the board most days & I miss it. Hope you all are well. Thanks again.
-
Another big storm is on it's way for Sunday. 50+ cm of snow with blizzard conditions (converted I think that works out to about 2 ft). I'm supposed to work that day, we will see. The last big storm I didn't go in for my shift at 11:30 am & they closed the store at 2 pm. Home Depot doesn't usually close due to weather but during that storm the conditions were so bad that some roads were closed. I can't wait for this winter to be over! How many days until spring??
-
Paula - I wanted to ask you about the Vintage Kitchen Facebook page - I'm in Canada, so can I put items up for sale on it or is it for items only in the USA? Thanks!
-
Meant to add that we usually get a bad snow storm on Ground Hog day anyway, so it's not unexpected in that sense. We always have more than 6 weeks of winter whether or not the ground hog sees his/her shadow, but it would be nice for a bit of sun to greet the ground hog as he/she eases out of his/her burrow tomorrow morning.
-
Yes, I did survive the 3 storms in the last week, but Mother Nature has another one (blizzard) on it's way tomorrow afternoon/evening/overnight. I'm off tomorrow but I do work on Tues. Last Friday night I stayed at a co-worker's as I had to work early on Sat morning, she suggested that I stay Sat night too, as it snowed all day Sat, but I needed to go home to see to my cat, Jazzmine. January was cold here but virtually no snow until this past week. I hope Feb doesn't continue the snow trend. I saw a picture of Grumpy cat on Facebook tonight that summed it up for me, it showed the cat in snow up to her neck with the saying "Enough Already"
-
The storm may have missed New York City but it hit us full on in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. I didn't go to work today because of the storm. I live in a rural area and i'm about a mile from the main road. I wasn't sure that I would have been able to get back home had I gone to work. It was a good thing as my street wasn't plowed at 4 pm when I checked last. It's still snowing and the winds are still blowing. I still have power & have the bath tub full of water incase the power does go off as I'm on a well. At 4 pm the snow was up to my knees & deeper in drifts. I'm moving in March back into the city, so I'll be much closer to work and not on a well, so will have water in power outages. Hopefully all those in the storm's path will get through it OK.
-
Diane - I read the sample of your book and really enjoyed it. I have not purchased it yet as I wanted to ask what forms of payment Amazon takes other than credit card? Do they take gift cards, if so what ones? Keep in mind that I am in Canada, if that makes a difference.
I too am sorry to read that Mim has passed away.
-
Diane - what are the columns about that are going in your book?
-
Diane - Today is a holiday in most (if not all) provinces in Canada. Sounds like you've had a productive day!
-
Patsy - I was very lucky that I lost very little food. Most of my co-workers went longer without power than I did. In fact some are still without power and those with wells are also without water. Generators are selling like hot cakes.
-
Thanks for the good wishes Aeg & Patsy - My power came back on yesterday while I was at work. It was nice to have a hot shower this morning before heading off to work. The shipment of generators that I mentioned before arrived last evening after the store had closed for the day. We contacted the customers and I (along with a few other co-workers) went back to the store so they could come & pick them up. I had a great nap after work this evening to try to catch up on some sleep. I've thrown out some food from my fridge but I didn't open my freezer during the outage, so I should fare better there. My power was out for about 28-30 hours. I'm off tomorrow, so I will get caught up on chores etc.
-
At work today charging cell & playbook. Going to a co-workers home after work for a shower. It will feel good. I will probably loose all my frozen food & and most of what's in my fridge unless it comes back on tonight. There are long line-ups for gasoline & generators. We sold the last D batteries this morning. Could have been a whole lot worse, I guess. There are so many trees down on power lines.
-
No power at home due to Arthur! Not sure where is storm is at the moment. Still windy. We sold all the generators we had in stock & more were being trucked in from Toronto for tomorrow. Most of the city is without power, and since I have a well, no water. 🙁
-
Hi Aegbooks & June - thanks for your good wishes. I read about Tony Gywnn but didn't know he had cancer. A girl I went to school with passed away in Jan this year from oral cancer.
-
Thanks for all the birthday wishes. Had birthday supper out yesterday. A great steak dinner followed by cheesecake. I won a free appetizer (on my next visit) when I spun "the wheel". I'm wearing my Red Sox shirt today & see that there's been lots of baseball talk. Saw Matt Stairs yesterday at the restaurant. He's from my hometown and has retired from baseball and is living back here now. I watched him play hockey with the high school team when he was a teenager. I saw online before that season started that he is doing TV coverage for the Phillies now.
-
Today was a sad day in New Brunswick as the funeral for the 3 RCMP officers who were shot while on duty June 4th was held. One of the officers was the dog handler and the dog stood by his masters coffin and cried and whimpered during the service. The funeral was televised but I had to work. We wore red shirts today to honour the RCMP.
-
Aegbooks - there wasn't much snow where I live but, oh the wind! Great fun shoveling last night when I got home from work. I had to fling the snow over my shoulder behind me to avoid getting it right back in my face. The roads were slippery this morning going to work (7am) but were bare when I drove home in the afternoon. There's more snow for Sunday and rain for Fri/Sat. Will this winter ever end??
-
There's a big snow storm heading my way. There are various snowfall amounts depending upon the track the storm takes. Wish tomorrow was my day off!! We never close for the weather, as we are an emergency centre.
-
Happy Birthday, Diane. Hope you have a great day!
-
The storm that Beth & Carol wrote about hit my area Wed night & all day Thursday. I was up really early Thursday morning so I could get the car out before the plow came down my street. I ended up locking all the car doors with my keys in the ignition & my spare car keys in my purse in the car. Luckily I had the house keys in my coat pocket and my cell phone in my pants pocket. I called CAA and they came & got my car door opened. I still was able to beat the plow! My car was running for close to an hour, so it was nicely warmed up!! I was early for work as I got such an early start to the day.
-
Curling was invented in Scotland. It is really popular in Western Canada near where you were living Paula. I have never played the game but I had planned to go to an Open House at a curling club years ago and then developed back pain and couldn't go. I got interested in watching the game on TV in 1980 during the World Junior Championships that were held in my hometown. The commentators explained the game very well so I watched it on TV, I would have had trouble understanding what it was all about if I had seen it in person.
-
If any of you are near the border & can get CBC from Canada, they are showing the Team Figure Skating live. Right now it's the Ladies Free and then the Dance Free. The Men have already skated.
-
I came across my receipt today from when I bought my Sony Mavica camera in 2000, for $799.00 + tax. Keep in mind that the price is Canadian dollars and at that time it was only worth about 55-60 cents to the US$. I really don't remember paying that much for it! I really loved that camera!
-
Jim In Canada we don't get the same commercials either during the Super Bowl game. I have seen 2 online this past week. I didn't watch the game as I'm not a football fan. Just finished watching Downton Abbey.
-
Mim, have a Happy Birthday!
-
Well above freezing and raining. Lots of freezing rain earlier today, so I cancelled my hair appointment and didn't go anywhere today.
-
Did anyone see the Downton Abbey Season 4 episode Sunday night? I see that they broke the record as more than 10 million people watched, Season 3 opener last year had 7.3 million.
-
Correction:. Currently 0 C, not Click... Just gotta love auto correct!!
-
It's been a wet, rainy day today. There was freezing rain this morning and temps were above freezing all day. Currently 0 Click (32F) and falling. We currently have a "Flash Freeze Warning", I have never seen this warning before. It will be slippery in the morning, but I have the day off, so I will not be out & about early.
-
Beth - This storm is supposed to miss my area, instead we will have a wind chill of - 39C overnight tonight. I guess I'd better plug the car in tonight so that it will start easily in the morning!
-
I'm having a quiet evening at home watching a series called Berkeley Square on DVD. It's set in 1902 London and it's about 3 young girls who become Nannys in wealthy homes. It's 8 1/2 hrs, so it's a mini series, I guess. Can't promise that I'll still be awake for midnight, even though my time zone puts me an hour ahead of Eastern time!
-
Carol - It's unusual for us to have this much snow in Dec. The freezing rain storms this far north are becoming more common, a result of global warming, I guess. At work today a shipment of snowblowers arrived (we were sold out prior to their arrival). We were selling them as fast as they could get them assembled!
-
We are getting the cold now, so hopefully all that snow will help insulate against it! Finally got the car out of the driveway & hopefully the plow won't come down the street again before I have to work in the morning.
-
I guess we got about 10 inches of snow overnight. I was out shovelling for 1 hour so far, cleared the front steps & walkway, cleared off the car & all around the car. Still have to shovel the mouth of the driveway, which could take me another hour. I have today off so I can take my time. So far this month we have had 119 cm of snow or about 48 inches.
-
Power crews from New England arrived in New Brunswick today to help with the power outages. Showing about 4700 still without power, some since Dec 23. We had a lot of battery sales at the Home Depot where I work, on Friday Dec 27th, as all retail stores were closed on Dec 25 & 26. People drove several hours for the batteries for their communities.
-
One of my friends who lives in Toronto has been without power for 7 days so far, last winter I was without power for about 13 hours and thought that was pretty bad.
-
I think I need to move to Florida!! 64 is a heat wave! The snow that Beth mentioned for tomorrow for her area will reach me later on Sunday. The low temperature for New Year's Day is -29 C, not sure what that translates to in F, but at -40 C = -40 F. Just wake me up on April Fool's Day!
-
Good to know Mysteryhorse, maybe that info applied to the plasma's when they first came out or I was misinformed.
Snowing here again today, some of my friends who live in other communities in New Brunswick, have their power back on today finally, it's been out for them since Monday. I did not loose power, thankfully.
-
Diane - Buy an LED over LCD TV. I read somewhere that a plasma TV is good if you watch TV in the dark (ie with no lights on).
-
The mincemeat tart, heated, with French Vanilla ice cream was wonderful! I can honestly say that I ate just the right amount at dinner time and do not feel stuffed.
-
Merry Christmas everyone! Still digging out from all the snow & then all the ice over the last few days. I'm very thankful that my power stayed on, there are some in my province of New Brunswick who may not have it back on until Sat. I had today off from work & went out to pick up a few things late this morning. Traffic was slow moving, but the drivers were especially nice in letting cars merge into their lane when exiting from a business. I picked up a pumpkin pie that I had ordered from a bakery this morning and noticed that they had mince meat tarts, so I bought 1 to try. It is made with beef, they told me to heat it up in the microwave for a few seconds and put some ice cream on it. I am saving it for tomorrow!
-
I hear the ice pellets hitting the window again, not looking forward to the drive to work in the morning. There is a freezing rain warning again for tomorrow. Give me snow any day over freezing rain. I was on a bus (years ago) that went off the road during freezing rain, scared me enough, although I was just bruised and shaken up. We did have to crawl out of the escape hatch in the ceiling of the bus as it had flipped over on its right side where the door was.
-
The snow has stopped, I guess the storm moved more quickly than expected. I fell asleep in the late afternoon and when I went out to shovel I was pleasantly surprised to see that my neighbour across the street had cleared the mouth of my driveway up to the car's front fender! I shoveled for 20 minutes to just reach the car from the front door. I was out for 1 hour but haven't done the back half of the driveway or the back door yet. Not sure how much snow fell but it seemed to be up to my knees in most places unless there was drifting.
-
Still snowing hard, keeping warm inside and watching Game of Thrones Season 3 again.
-
Patsy - I've never heard of the McBride series, I googled it and found that there are 10 in total. I'll try to see if I can stream them online.
-
I made the Cinnamon Swirl Cream of Wheat this morning, very good. I use skim milk instead of water and added a sliced banana on top with a bit more skim milk. I made Cinnamon Pastry coffee in my Keurig.
It's snowing heavily now, I went out to the car and brought my snow brush inside the house. I don't work until 12:30 pm tomorrow, so I'll have lots of time to clear the mouth of the driveway after the plow driver fills it up about 5:20am. On week days that seems to be the time the plow goes by. I park the car about half way in the driveway, so I only need to shovel the area between the car and the street to get the car out. I shovel the rest in the next few days and hope that I finish that task before it snows again! Sometimes a kind neighbour with a snow blower helps out!
-
Carol - No snow here yet, it's supposed to start around 6-7 am Sunday & keep snowing to about 3 pm Monday.
-
Sandy - The stories are set in New England but filmed in NS. It made the news headlines all over the Maritimes when they first started filming. Tom Selleck is one of my favourite actors. I have the complete series of Magnum PI
-
Sandy - I also love the Jesse Stone movies with Tom Selleck, they are filmed in Nova Scotia. I have never read any of the Jesse Stone books. I have missed a couple of the movies but I'm not sure which ones. I saw a boxed set of all 8 dvd movies at Costco at a time when I didn't have the extra money, it included a black ball cap with the white letters PPD, like Tom wore.
-
The weather forecast is now saying 50 cm which converts to almost 20". The amount keeps getting more every time I look at the forecast, so I'll stop looking!
Canada Post announced this week that they will be phasing out mail delivery to homes. They will instead use community boxes. The suburbs here have never had delivery to the house, so there is no change for me. It could mean great changes for rural areas though. Also, the cost of a stamp will increase Mar 31 from 63 cents to $1.00, if you buy only 1 stamp. If you buy a booklet they will be 85 cents each. At Costco today they were upselling rolls of 100 stamps, I told them it would take me 50 years to use them up! I did find Cream of Wheat and tomorrow morning I will have to decide between Cinnamon Swirl and Maple "Something or Other". Can't remember. The flavoured ones were in a variety pack that was on sale, I hope that doesn't mean that it's discontinued.
Bill I did buy a box of Red River Cereal to try, but only because it can be done in the microwave. -
Diane Yes, that's what I want, the little packets (instant), that you can do in the microwave. I'm not a fan of oatmeal at all!
-
Third day in a row for bone chilling temperatures. Tomorrow the snow storm is expected, it's coming up the eastern seaboard of the USA. The forecast is for 25-35 cms of snow, I forget how to convert that to inches, but think it's more than 1 foot (unfortunately)!
I'm craving Cream of Wheat cereal this morning, but have none. Looking at their website I see that it comes in different flavours, hope that the flavoured ones are available in Canada!
-
Have any of you seen the movie "The Book Thief", it's set WW11 Germany?
-
Bought a small Strawberry-Rhubarb pie at the grocery store this afternoon, it won't be like homemade but maybe warmed up with some French Vanilla ice cream it will suffice.
-
Bob From what Liz mentioned it may be that meat in mince meat pie is more of a "Canadian thing"! Razzleberry pie is another one I've never heard of.
-
Just finished reading the posts from the last few days and wanted to comment about pie. Pie is one of my favourite desserts (along with New York style cheesecake). I have never tried mince meat pie, some of my Mom's sisters would make it at Christmas but they put meat in it (probably venison) and that didn't appeal to me at all. I love pumpkin, apple, strawberry-rhubarb, coconut cream, lemon meringue, bumbleberry to name a few. I have never heard of the White Christmas Pie that Paula mentioned and have never tried Pecan pie. I love to eat extra old cheddar cheese with my apple pie and love it for breakfast or any time of the day. Now I have a pie craving!!
-
With the warmer temperatures all the snow that I mentioned last week for today fell as rain. I think we got 2-3 inches. I've had a bit of water in the basement this evening. My day off today wasn't relaxing as I kept checking on the rain accumulation outside around the house and on the basement.
-
Weather forecast for Wed Nov 27th is 30-40 cm of snow for Fredericton, New Brunswick. I think 25 cm = 1 foot (or so). I've got to find the snow brush for my car, I guess I put it in a very safe place last spring!
-
50 years ago today I remember watching on TV at home about JFK's assassination. I was too young to be in school, but it is one of my first memories that I can pinpoint the exact date.
-
Auto-correct changed FOL to FOLLOW, stupid auto-correct!
-
Patsy - Yes your FOLLOW sale is outstanding. I would love to be closer so that I could attend. How many sales per year does your FOL have?
-
It's Thanksgiving Weekend in Canada. Happy Thanksgiving to Marsden and any other Canadians. Had a glorious day today weather wise, so I enjoyed my day off. I'm working Sat & Sun and will have Turkey dinner on Monday. I'll be watching as much of my Red Sox as I can!
-
I had to comment on the discussion about Shingles. I've had them at least 8 times since June 2007. The first time was the worst. The rash was like a solid belt several inches wide on the left side of my body running from my spine to just below my belly button. Clothing or bedding touching it near drove me crazy. The nerve pain was bad too. Each year the outbreaks have milder each time. I usually came down with them in June or especially August (not this year, so far *touch wood*). I'll have to read about the vaccine & how to get it in Canada. I won't be 60 for a few years yet!
-
Salmegal That's terrible! Are you able to get everything replaced, like your SS card & driver's license?
-
Mysteryhorse - Happy Birthday! Enjoy YOUR day!!
-
Diane - so sorry about your sister. Glad to read that you are making plans for some trips away. Get lots of rest & treat yourself to something, it doesn't have to be food. Something like a massage, pedicure or manicure.
-
Diane - Thinking of you... Take care of yourself, too. {{Hugs}}
-
I have been reading with interest your discussion of newspapers. I grew up with getting 2 daily papers at home. When I moved away from home I always had a newspaper delivered, for a time I had 2, but found that I couldn't get to look at them all, so I'm back to getting 1. The online paper that was free now has a charge. For about $3 a month above what I pay for home delivery I have online access to the 3 daily papers in the province and 19 weekly English/French papers. I look through the papers but don't read everything. I look at most of the sale flyers and obituaries, and read local news. I think I'll check the cost of online access only tomorrow. I do know that the flyers are delivered separately if you don't subscribe to the paper and they are available online too.
-
I should have added my location when I talk of the weather. I'm in Canada, province of New Brunswick which is east of Maine. We had a tornado touch down about 30-45 minutes away from where I live last week. I don't remember any tornados around here when I was a kid (1960's).
-
Marson Hi to you too! We had a very, very rainy day yesterday. I read today 119 mm in total - that's almost 5 inches of rain. Came home from work last night to water in the basement. It didn't reach the furnace, so I was happy about that.
Dianne Just looked at the Santas. They are so nice. I love the old vintage style Santas.
-
Eileen - Happy Birthday! I hope you have a great day!!
-
Diane - Found your sister's auction items tonight. I wasn't searching under Advanced Search yesterday.
-
Diane - I just searched ebay for your sisters items and couldn't find any listing's under the ID you gave. Did you list them under your ID perhaps?
-
Marson - I've been in your area when we drove out west in 1974, we had a flat tire somewhere east of Winnipeg and the moose flies were terrible. I think we were in Steinbach (may have that spelled wrong) too. We took the Yellowhead Hwy from Manitoba to Jasper Alberta. That was quite the trip!
-
Bill - I remember fishing for brook trout as a kid, and loved eating it. Is Lake trout different?
-
Bill - In my province New Brunswick the Atlantic Salmon is THE fish to fish. Ted Williams (Boston Red Sox) used to come here to fish on the Miramichi River. Tom Selleck was here too.
-
Bill - where in Canada did you go fishing?
-
Bill - I don't eat hot cereal at all now. My brother used to eat Red River Cereal when we were teenagers. I usually mix 2 or 3 different cereals and add a sliced banana or blueberries and skim milk. No sugar at all. I try to buy cereal that isn't sweetened. There is a brand called Nature's Path that makes organic cereal that I stock up on when it's on sale. I Google Grits and see that they are corn. I'm allergic to corn, so I couldn't eat them.
-
Matson- Hi! Happy Canada Day to you too! I'm in New Brunswick. Where in Manitoba are you?
-
The things I learn here! Being from Canada I had no idea what grits were but I never, ever thought they'd be eaten for Breakfast! I think they talked about them on The Beverly Hillbillies. I used to eat Cream of Wheat all the time, but haven't for a few years, got tired of it I guess. I liked it with a bit of brown sugar and milk. Oatmeal I ate as a kid growing up but never eat it now.
-
Thank you Irene, June, and Mysteryhorse for your birthday wishes. I had a great day today and perfect weather for a change.
I plan to empty a storage unit over the next few days, so I am planning my strategy - donate / sell / keep / garbage. Anyone have any tips?
-
The rain is supposed to start around dawn here (New Brunswick, Canada) from what will be Post Tropical Storm Andrea by that time. They keep changing the expected rainfall amount, now less than 20mm. I think 25mm = 1 in. Earlier today the amount was 35-45mm. I get water in the basement with heavy rainfall with amounts over 40mm, so that's why I am watching it closely. I appreciate the weather reports from areas south & west of me!

I watched pt 1 of the Bletchley Circle yesterday and recorded Pt 2 & will watch it in a few minutes. I really, really like it. I haven't seen much on TV (in the last few years) set in the early to mid fifties. The same applies with Mr Selfridge as his store opens in 1909. There are lots of shows set a few years later around WW1.

Diane - Yes the blue eyes but I loved his red Jaguar car too! That was sad when the character was killed off and then John Thaw himself passed away. I did a search on my PBS station and no Mystery! shows are airing currently.
-

Diane- I watched Ins Lewis when it first aired but missed Morse so much I couldn't get into it. I will see if Poirot is on the PBS station I get from Maine.

I see that there are 8 episodes of Mr Selfridge not 7.

I always read with interest the TV shows that everyone here likes, especially since reading about Downtown Abbey. I love that show! Last night when I couldn't sleep I read about the code breakers. I found The Bletchley Circle on PBS tonight and have it set to record. I am watching Mr Selfridge currently and I see that there are 7 episodes in total (maybe a few too many). I have liked the series Vikings (seen in Canada on the History channel). The final episode is tomorrow night. Has PBS had Mystery on lately? Seems like it's been a long time but I may have missed it.
Dianne - So sorry to read about your Sister. -
The snow has reached us in New Brunswick, Canada. Hoping that I am still able to enjoy my weekend off. Lots to get done on my 2 days off.
-
Blizzard here this evening. That makes 2 Sunday's in a row. It sounds a bit like the wind has died down. If only the snow would all be blown from the mouth of the driveway so that I can drive right out in the morning! LOL!
-
I like to thank everyone about their kind words regarding Rascal. I went to work today - wasn't sure that I'd be able to. I cried all the way there in the car this morning. Something about being in the car and driving brings on the tears so easily for me.
June Yes that's Rascal in my profile picture.
Carol I have no other pets at the moment. I will be selling the house I am living in and will wait until that process is over before getting another cat. I am definitely a cat person. It was really hard coming home tonight with no one to greet me.
-
Thank you Mysteryhorse, Irene and Patsy.
-
This afternoon my dear sweet boy, Rascal, crossed Rainbow Bridge. I was holding him on my lap. RIP Rascal

Patsy - When will you be in PEI? Is it Charlottetown?
-
Thanks everyone for your Birthday wishes. I had a great day today. I have the BEST co-workers!!
-
I would like to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I head back to work today.

My Mom passed away on Fri June 8th. She had Alzheimers and was 84. She was in a wheelchair and no longer spoke much. The funeral is on Tues. I am putting together a few things/ stories to tell. I need to find more pictures.

Casino - add my positive thoughts & prayers for you both.
There were much bigger crowds for Prince Charles & Camilla today than for their last visit to Canada in 2009. We had great weather today too. They have moved on to another part of the country now.
-
headlinehill (Janice) posted an update Monday, May 21, 2012, 12:43pm EDT, 12 years ago
Charles and Camilla were at CFB Gagetown this morning and now they are in Saint John. I'll see on the news how the crowds were today. They arrived last evening here in Fredericton but the newspaper said that only about 40 people were at the airport. It wasn't very well advertised when they were arriving. I would have gone had I not been so exhausted from the very busy day @ Home Depot
