• HI Carol!!! its a calculated risk....I used to almost NEVER accept those sorts of offers as I figured if they want me to end the auction sooner, it MUST be going to garner more than I anticipated. Though lately, in refusing to add a BIN, Ive seen that in fact, that isnt always the case. About fifty percent end for LESS than the offered BIN price....Ya pays yer nickel and takes yer chances, I guess.... Once years ago, at a garage sale, I spotted this little black coffin on a table....opening it up, it was a promotional gift box sent to critics with a review copy of Nightmare Before Christmas. About a n hour after it was listed, I got an email form a guy in Australia, asking if I would consider a BIN price. I politely refused and he wrote back saying....."Im going to win this anyway, so you might as well sell it to me, hows $1500US sound!?" I couldnt get the damn thing packed up fast enough!!! I guiess he was a Tim Burton freak with a LOT oF money to blow!!!! Anyway, good luck on the book!!! WHats the title of the book, if you dont mind my asking? 🙂

  • Just got home from Bakersfield hitting our favorite antique mall, thern had liunch with my best pakl of 45 years....GOOD day! Found some photographs, Stacy got a BEAUTIFUL Bessie Pease Gutmann print....Saturday morning I got a three foot in diameter early 19th century Mexican plaque carving of Jesus, Joseph and Mary (as my father used to say!) Damn thing weighs about fifty pounds.....I may keep that, its pretty cool! 🙂 Yeah, Paula, back in the 80's I could find Rookwood all over here....I dont think Ive landed a peice in two years now.....ya just cant specialize anymore unless you have really deep pockets...and some sort of clientele ready to follow you down to hell to pay for it. I used to occasionally consign to Rago's auctions back in the day until he screwed me on a Limbert settle......UGH.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Bombay.....I had to cvall Ebay three times last week due to a crook trying to get the better of me....all of the ladies I talked to had HEAVY Indian accents, and their names were Peggy, Linda and Kathy...ACTUALLY, "Peggy" took my adversary to the cleaners....I was quite pleased, but it took awhile to get some results and relief! I really dont care WHAT their names are as long as I can get some help.......but it was amusing. I dont understand the reason for that, but no biggie....Ebay actually HELPED a seller! 🙂 @ June....most of my friends fathers were aircraft mechanics when I was growing up....My father worked for Henry Kaiser, so he was a buit of an oddball......My father in law was (hes 90 this year) a P-38 and P-51 mechanic during WWII.....such a cool guy!!! But most of them are gone....One of my best friends father is 94 next month, her bailed out of a B-17 over germany and spent 18 months in a German POW camp.....(where oddly, he says he was treated quite well) a dying breed....and I will be sad to see them go. My father was a Navy Armed Guard Gunner on liberty ships during the war, ands pent him time shootingh at wolf packs.....a bunch of brave folks!!! 🙂

  • Morning June! I live in Lancaster CA, close to Edwards AFB, NASA Flight Test, Lockheed Skunk Works, et al.....I USED to find a LOT of cool aviation books, ephemera, facotry models, etc. but most of my parents generation who had this sort of thing are now passed on, so the pickings are somewhat slimmer.....but I DO still occasionally find some noteworthy things.....Found a rocket sled model from Edwards a few years back.....did pretty well on that! 🙂

  • SATNROSE!!!!! Yes, he was a very kind person, and very sharp as well!!! Very good at teaching, for those who cared to learn! I remember bmajur and psthomas as well! 🙂 Thanks Patsy! 🙂

  • Hey gang! THANK YOU Paula! Must have been your link that I used to wander in here! As for books being in the tank, heck, I think everythings been in the tank the last couple of years. That said, the "good stuff" always does well, its the mid line things, from say $30-$80, that used to be my bread and butter, that have sort of suffered. Gone are the days when I could list an item, go pee, and come back to $300 worth of bids!!! 🙂 Well, not much you can do about that....used to be in the 70's, I could fill my truck on Saturday for $50, too, but those days are long gone now....:-)
I DID just buy about 800 LP's, most of which are still sealed, I'm doing pretty well with, but thats a fluke, for sure.

As for the trolls, Ebay could have stopped that problem in a heartbeat, but chose not to do anything about it. Many of the knowledgeable posters left some time ago....a couple still remain, but its a far cry from what it was say four or five years ago. One of the NON troll reasons for the nervous disintegration was that a few of the more "distilled" posters/dealers thought talking about your cat, or saying happy birthday or playing a song now and then was disruptive to the "academic" tone of the board... and a major rift ensued at that point, with the "wizards of antiques" disrespecting every comment that a personal note to it. That sort of intolererance also drove me up the wall and helped me to get the hell out of Dodge.
I started out dealing in glass, then american art pottery, and finally landed in the paper end of the business along time ago....but I DO remember little mom and pop shops that were exclusively glass related, etc.....those were the palces youd find some nifty items they werent particularly interested in for a song....I do sort of miss the days when you could walk into a shop; and pit your intellect and acumen vs. the owners...that was FUN! 🙂

There used to be a fellow on the book board that sort of "ran" things, as I recall, a very sharp guy who helped me a LOT when I had book questions, but for the life of me, I cant remember what his name was. He would occasionally hop into the antiques board with a help as well.
I know enough about books to be dangerous, and in the area I'm in, I don't have much competition for books. Problem is, its always been a lower middle class sort of place which has catered to the aircraft industry for decades, so you dont SEE a lot of interesting books here......but I get what I gets, I guess, like the rest of us. Anyway, again, thanks for the warm welcome, I think Im going to like it here!!! 🙂

  • Oh, Ive been on Ebay pretty steady since 1997........an old man for Ebaying.....:-)

  • Hi Everyone! Thanks for the welcome. I was a contributor to the antiques board for years, primarily in the field of ephemera, until the troll action becasme so bad, that one of my best friends life and that of her child was threatened. At that point, I left....I go back only sporadically to ask a question now and then and was sad to see they have another resident fool disrupting what used to be a very enjoyable board.....Hopefully, I can occasionally contribute some information....I am also fairly conversant on records, if thats of interest to anyone. been in the business since the mid 1970's in the Los Angeles area, and am lucky enough to have a wife who enjoys the hunt as much as I do!!! Again, thanks for welcoming me here. Oddly, I got the link from a post in the antiques board, where I had gone to post a problem! 🙂
