• @dainisjg Do you find as I do that in reading the Kindle version of some books there is an occasinal repeat of a page from a book ?

  • @dainisjg Jim , Congratulations to you and the rest of the family on the birth of Estrella Marie.

  • Good morning BBers, Looks like we'll have another sunny and hot day here in Indy--- 76 now and supposed to get up to 93.
Since neither DH or I are telly watchers I was not at all familiar with Slim Whitman. But @dainisjg I did like that one about the rose on the shelf. LOL.
I have been doing price research on ebay. What has happened to the Fire King market ? I have 3 Fire King Tony the tiger Esso mugs that I bought several years ago at a garage sale. They now seem to be valued at about what i payed for them.

  • @dainisjg ---- Jim-- Thanks for your help . These are negatives which are 3 5/16th with a 2/16th clear strip on one end. The roll of film was originally sent to Fox Studios in San Antonio, Texas in about 1932 . I know that the Fojo Studios near St. Louis are still in existence as i have passes by their building many times. I will pass this information on to my son-in-law who has a latent photography hobby and has expressed an interest in getting copies made of the negatives.

  • @dainisjg Jim, I have a batch of negatives from the 1930s. Would like to get them developed. Can you offer any advice on how to do that ? Thanks.

  • @dainisjg /Jim --- Your travelogue is spectacular. I certainly will be keeping a copy for myself and sharing with my family.

  • @dainisjg Jim, I have an opinion but I had best not state that opinion. If I did it would go something like this "They hear with their ears. Not their brain"

  • Good Morning from Penn's Woods where we are now in the eye of the storm. All is calm after a very windy and rainy yesterday. While the rain was not too bad, the winds and the wind gusts were high. Just received a phone call from my hairdresser wanting to know about Swifty. How nice is that! Although my one aunt did call to ask about him, not a peep from my brothers. Guess they figure Swifty isn't stupid but still...:-)

Haven't had time to read the board since around the last time I posted so I'll be back a bit later after I have had a chance to do so.

Jim @dainisjg ~ The mini-office area is so cool, but what DH and I really, really liked is the pull-out pantry. BTW when I said good thing that DH was slender to that he could fit in the broom closet - I meant sideways . Closet was 12 inches wide. I sent an email to Swifty to show him your pull-out pantry. that in case he finds himself in a place where that would be workable. When DH saw it he liked it so much that he said that it wasn't too late and he could build that for Swifty's broom closet where he just put in the shelves. AGH! Enough! It would have been one thing to have had the idea before but to do it now??? He has enough other time-consuming little things there to take care off as it is. And don't get me started on all the things around here! LOL

I did receive an email from Swifty on Sunday saying that the pantry was now full and that now he had some empty cupboards and could order more food. I had to laugh at seeing about 10 boxes of Organic Mac and white cheddar cheese. He said, "Do you know how much cheaper things are when you order by the case?" For someone who used to do nothing but takeout, it is nice to see that he is starting to cook a little - even if it is only box and frozen stuff. He made lunch time his main meal.

He called early this morning. I was so glad to hear from him. Last we were in touch was last evening around 9 pm when he emailed to say that he had posted some pixs on facebook. Not the greatest since he wasn't using his good camera and it was very dark, but enough to make out that the Starbucks across the street where I get DH and I coffee was flooded. Swifty had told me that his building was right on the edge of A zone and mandatory evacuations had been ordered. I found a map where I entered his address and yep, not just one the edge but the pin was right on the line. One either side of him was B zone. He said that residents of his building last night were saying they should petition to get changed to at least a B if not a C. The building behind them is a C and given that the waters once again never got past the far edge of the British Garden which has never flooded in its history. Yesterday the water reached the same point and then receded.

I heard those words that mothers know will come, "You were right, Mom." He found out that the battery operated emergency lights in the stairwells only stay on for 2-3 hours and it would have been nice to have a flashlight! Seems the residents of the building who stayed went down to the lobby at high tide/surge around 9pm. On his way down the stairs, he met two people who were wearing 'head lights' so that lit his way down and on the way back up 9 flights he used his phone flashlight. Now I have several Christmas gifts to put on his list - 2 head lights from Gander Mts., flash light, box of matches and a candle! He did say that he met lots of his neighbors now.

On the reports of there being 4 or 5 feet of water on the floor of the Stock Exchange - false. I heard that flipping channels and it was on the one that Nancy Grace is on so that might it suspect right there. But as DH and I discussed we could not figure out how there could be all that water on the stock exchange floor when it was located behind where Swifty is and is up a hill. Best we could come up with is that maybe the water from Battery Park had surged in there. Swifty said that the water was in the sub-basement or basement, not on the main floor.

Speaking of Battery Park, we are so glad that he did not buy there! The prices looked so good (relatively speaking) and you got a larger, newer place for the money. The downside was that it was quite a distance from the first subway stop. Swifty had told us that it was built on fill. DH and I thought it was similar to the Back Bay in Boston where it was fill from the 1700s or at least the 1800s. Turns out the fill was from the 1970s when they built the World Trade Center! We had just driven by there on our way home on Sat. and to think it was then 13-15 feet under water.

Helen @10bbg10 You and others might like looking at these maps. It shows how the tip of Manhattan has been filled in over the centuries. Swifty lives on solid ground - it was there since 1690 when the Dutch settled there. If you look at the map in the area with the bold black outline on the right hand side, you will see a triangle. That is Hanover Square where he lives. The sorta star shape down below near the tip is the fort and the bold line with 'jagged' edges is where the wall was. If I knew before, I had long forgotten how Wall Street got it's name. A wee bit of American history with these maps. I've always enjoyed reading maps.

  • Good morning Book board friends,
@dainisjg Jim, Didn't change here for the sake of change but got lots of problems because I had to change. My 9 year old computer bit the dust. The youngest DGS, now 17 years old built and installed new one for me. After a month I am still learning my way around and finding some work-a-rounds. For instance, I cannot delete pictures from a Sandisk nor can I re-format the disk. The only way that I can delete the pics is from my camera. And the computer is verrrrrrrrrrrrry slow loading the pics.

Our DD, his mom, is coming by this morning to try to resolve some of the problems. I've suggested that maybe the DGS should discuss these problems while in his tech class or with the teacher.

And though unrelated getting and keeping the printer oprating. i always try to get just afew more prints before replacing an ink cartridge but that seems to be impossible with this printer. It refuses to print until that new cartridge is in place.

I had better get busy with making a list and preparing to have her help. Sure glas she lives only a few blocks away.

  • @dainisjg Jim, I have a camera question for you. I have a Kodak Easy Share M340. Do they wear out? I've had this one 3-4 years and have taken lots of pictures. It seems that the picture quality is diminishing. Thanks, Helen in Indy

  • @dainisjg ----O.K Jim---How do you keep a moron in suspense? Never mind. I can answer that . You ask the question "How do you keep a moron in suspense? " just as she is ready to goes off to bed. So --- How do you keep a moron in suspense?

  • Good morning, BBers,
Have been busy, busy, busy. I’m up and ’attem’ this morning after a day of being under DH’s nursing care for 24 hours because of some major dental work. I now have new full upper plate and a fairly new partial lower plate. Now DH has to pursue the next step— X-Rays— of his foot care.

    @dainisjg Jim,, Pictures ! Pictures ! Pictures !

@9mart23 , Irene, Does etsy allow more than one picture? If not it seems to me that it is going to very difficult to sell clothing there. I'm going to be taking my etsy account down. I just do not to not have the time to work on etsy, my eBay store and my book database.

@dianecox , Diane, I have been fortunate in that I have made 3 European trips. Once on 40th wedding anniversary when our children chipped in to have eldest DD make all the arrangements and take me to France and the UK. On that trip we did get over into the far northwest of Italy. Then some 10-12 years later "good old eBay "sales provided the funds for 2 Italy / Southern France trips with a garden tour group. I found both Southern France and Italy beautiful and interesting .

  • @dainisjg Jim, Thanks for trying to help. The real problem was that I was getting a blotchy reflection of the tree leaves and twigs. After I moved the objects over under the umbrella I still had some reflection ( shiny surfaces ) but I could accept those.
My camera is a 'point and shoot' so no controls there.
Here are the images that I will be using:::

All of that stewing for possibly $25.00 set of merchandise !!

  • Just past midnight and I am ready for that 'bed & book.' I'm reading a book about growing up Mormon. Interesting.

I've been Facebook chatting with the far flung network of my nieces and nephews. I am so glad that they have found a way and are staying in touch with each other.

Had a few nice book orders which are now all ready for DH to pack. Seems like I am very slow tonight. I did have a very nice early evening nap. Woke up very startled as I had been so sleeping so soundly.

@dainisjg , Jim , Not sure that it is the same but hog roasts are popular around here for large group activities. My DGS does one or two at his campground every summer.

  • @dainisjg Jim, What a wonderful adventure for you and Jenny. I'm going keep that one to share with my family. Thank you for sharing with us. It is well proven what we knew already --- that you are great photographer and no slouch at story telling.

  • @bethofvt ---- Multiple reasons for doing the 3 day listing. One is to have the listing end on Sunday night. If it does not sell I can then then relist it for either a 7 or 10 days.
But your 7 day idea is a good one. There would still be time to relist for a different length of time .
I have not read the all the rules and possibilities for this promotion. But I don't understand your comment " The thing with fixed price listings is no matter what you set them for duration, you have no idea when they may end. You could list them all today and have them all end tonight. Or you could list them all for 7 days and have them end Sunday, Monday, etc." Will go back and reread some of the promotion rules.

@dainisjg Each person had signed the photograph and given their home town. If I put it on my bookselling sites I could list the last names of each person. Early on I sold some ephemera on eBay by putting names in the title. I believe that people actually search for their family names.

    Gotta go now.
    Thanks , Helen

  • @dainisjg Jim, Since the photo is actually inscribed/ signed by each of the parties in the photo I had thought some family member might be interested in a copy.
I think that if such a copy from any of my brothers military days were to turn up I would like copies of it to give to their children. Or I could steer them to where they could buy their own copy.

  • @dainisjg Jim, I do not have a scanner right now. i made the mistake of sending DH and a DGS out to buy a new scanner / printer . They came back with the printer only. But have on my list to replace it with the scanner / printer.
I have saved you suggestion for I get that.
    Thanks, Helen
    Thanks,

  • @dainisjg Jim, I have this photo of DH's Treasure Island training group dated June 20, 1947 and signed on the back by each of the group members. I'm considering trying to sell copies on eBay. (Opinions from all welcome on that venture.) Could you suggest how I might go about getting those copies made? And the probable cost of doing so?

    Thanks for any guidance. Helen

  • @dainisjg , Jim- I, too, laughed a lot at your comments about getting a good picture and life with your wife. Of course I have always enjoyed your posts.

@mysteryhorse And loved your posts about buying part interest in a race horse. And your picture. I assume that the horse in the picture is part yours. How many hands high are you?

Many years ago my brother fell into a deal where he bought a race horse. If I recall correctly the horses name was Dick Nashipur. The horse won the race and my brother immediately sold him. But somewhere in our family there is a picture of my brother holding the reins of said horse. I think that he bought his wife a fur piece with part of the winnings.

I have a couple of high school annuals. Have been trying to find Seth Poppel to verify if there are any famous persons in these annuals. I sent an email to his aol.com address but have had no response. In other inquiries he has responded very quickly. Any information on how I could find him.? I did Google.

@dianecox I have been really troubled about your sister's health problems. I think that I was not around when you first mentioned her illness . But have gathered from more recent comments that she had brain surgery.

  • Jim (@dainisjg), your last post had me laughing so hard. Also, thanks for the birthday wishes.

  • did green alert come in green? I see it as black [sign]. Or maybe my monitor isn't calibrated correctly.

@dainisjg and @jimd : And don't forget -- no seat belts. And my brother and I would play in the back of the station wagon! not to mention climb back and forth over the seats. I never liked those old transitor radios that had those old ear plugs -- didn't see the point of them, the music sounded tinny enough coming out of the radio. And there is a point after which you really can't tell the difference in sound quality from speakers of all these sound systems [ I can't]. And what was the big whoop about going HDTV? It is a little better at most/maybe from a old picture from a strong station. Remember all the joggers with their walkmans? from there things have gone into ipods.

  • @dainisjg Ha ha great rant.. as one who grew up without a telephone in my household until I was 16, and riding bicycles without helmets and knee pads, I often wonder how the spoiled would survive in our world. JimD
